Driving Test Oasis Provided by Richmond Kiwanis and City of Richmond

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Richmond recently inspected one of its completed projects - the Driving Test Oasis. The local Richmond Kiwanis Club partnered with the City of Richmond to provide this waiting area for those who accompany individuals taking the driving examination, the final stage in obtaining a driving license.

Kiwanians provided $1,000 to pay for the supplies to construct the Driving Test Oasis which is located next to the Richmond Fire Station on Madison Avenue (near the Richmond Post Office).

Governor of the Kentucky-Tennessee District of Kiwanis; and Ben McPherson, 1987-1988 president of the Richmond Kiwanis Club.

The Driving Test Oasis project was initiated after Dr. Glen Kleine, a local Kiwanian, took an Eastern Kentucky University international student to take the driver's examination. He discovered that those accompanying the individual taking the exam are asked to get out of the car at this point and to wait until the car with the individual taking the test and the examiner returns. This usually takes about five to ten minutes. Kleine felt a covered waiting area would be a convenience for parents, spouses, and friends who accompany individuals taking the examination. The City of Richmond agreed and the city provided the labor to construct the waiting area.
