Regular meeting International Dinner with the EKU/Berea College - Madison County Homemakers at the Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM), 325 University Drive, at our regular meeting meeting time from 6 to 7 pm. (BCM, as many of you who deliver for Home Meals Delivery know, is located on the edge of the EKU campus.) We will NOT meet at the library on this evening. All Kiwanians and their guests will have an opportunity to eat a full meal with drinks at no cost. Kiwanis will provide all of the drinks and cups for the dinner of about an estimated 90 people. Please do not sit together as an entire group, but rather every two or three of us sit with the international students or international faculty. This will give our members an opportunity to learn more about international students and international faculty members from around the world. It also gives us an opportunity to meet the Madison County Homemakers, the annual sponsors of this dinner for the international community. From 1915 to the early 1960s the only countries that had Kiwanis clubs were the United States and Canada. By the time of the Kiwanis International convention in Los Angeles in 1964, ten countries had active Kiwanis clubs: Mexico, Switzerland, the Bahamas, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Iceland, Japan, and Jamaica. In 2019-2020 Kiwanis clubs are in 70 nations worldwide. They are, by area: Africa (13): Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Dahomey, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. Asia (18): Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, French Polynesia, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Philippine, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Europe (22): Albania, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland-Faroes, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway (Norden), Poland, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Switzerland, Turkey, and United Kingdom. North America (12): Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Dominica, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique, St. Andrew's Island (part of Columbia), Saint Lucia, and United States of America. South America (5): Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, and Panama. Remember that the defining statement of Kiwanis is: As a global project in coordination with UNICEF, Kiwanis members and clubs contributed more than $80 million toward the global elimination of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), the leading preventable cause of mental retardation. Beginning in 2010 Kiwanis International joined with UNICEF to launch a new worldwide health initiative, The Eliminate Project, dedicated to wiping out maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT), which kills more than 100,000 babies worldwide each year. Kiwanis International is an international service club founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. It is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. There are more than 600,000 members in Kiwanis and its family of clubs. Each year, clubs sponsor nearly 150,000 service projects, clubs raise more than $100 million and report more than 18.5 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children.
